From 19 October, “stop on request” will be implemented on several bus routes
From 19 October, “stop on request” will be introduced on 20 bus routes outside central Riga. This means that the bus driver will only stop at such a stop if the passenger shows their wish to get off the bus in time by pressing the door opening button or, when at the bus stop, if the passenger is visible to the driver and stands by the stop sign. Initially, this will be introduced on 20 bus routes at around 300 stops, but in total more than 400 stops have been identified where this could be introduced. This system is already in place in many places in Europe and makes public transport move faster, reducing trip times.
The company’s careful monitoring of passenger flows in different parts of the city has led to the identification of stops that are mostly in the outer neighbourhoods or suburbs of Riga, with low passenger flows, which is why it has been decided to introduce such a system.
A special sign will be placed at the “stop on request” – a raised hand icon on a green background. The signs will be located on the bus stop post, above the schedules. At other stops where there is no such sign, the trip order will remain the same as usual. The sign will also be integrated into transport schedules, on public transport screens next to route information, on the website next to schedules and elsewhere. Information about the “stop on request” will also be available in an audio announcement inside the public transport.
Initially, while drivers and passengers adapt to the new system, public transport drivers will follow the flow of passengers and stop even if a passenger is standing at the door but has not pressed the door opening button. At the same time, this will help our passengers get to their destinations faster, so we encourage passengers not only to arrive at their stop on time, but also to signal to the driver that they wish to get on or off the transport – if you are in the transport, press the button to let the driver know that you wish to get off. And if you are waiting at a bus stop, be visible and stand in the area visible to the driver.
